Flaithulach Music opened in 2011 as a small specialist music shop with a clear emphasis on professional music tuition. Over the last couple of years it has grown considerably into a respectable independent music centre focused on direct friendly customer service and fair prices.
Knaresborough School of Music is based at Flaithulach and has become a trusted and increasingly popular venue for people of all ages seeking professional, qualified, experienced music tuition. It is run by musician & sound designer Heather Emmett - a qualified, experienced music teacher, who amongst other things has taught privately, in schools and in higher education.
In the past Heather has worked as a performer, music composer & sound FX designer for TV, commercials, animation etc. including session recording for a US film soundtrack by Dame Evelyn Glennie & Ian Dean. Heather has performed live at the Royal Festival Hall, the London Hippodrome, Band on the Wall, Barbican Theatre and played sax in the BBC Big Band of the Year. She has worked as a music and sound designer for US and Canadian films, commercials, trailers & pilots and has worked extensively on sound & music for animation projects including projects for Greenpeace & BAFTA screenings. She has also worked on commercials for Martini, BMW, TV documentaries & video games. Heather's sound design has helped to secure several international awards and she was awarded for best sound (with special commendation) at Japan Digital Arts. Heather has written and published two books Sounds to Die for and Chanter & Whistle.
After spending time in Southern Ireland, having taken up the Uilleann Pipes, Heather was inspired by the community approach to music there and subsequently setup Flaithulach Music Centre in Knaresborough.
"I hope I can help facilitate the opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to take up music, by creating a local, friendly, non-elitist atmosphere at highly competitive rates."
The shop is no longer genre specific (it now works as a general music shop serving Knaresborough, Harrogate and surrounding areas), selling musical instruments, instrument accessories, gifts and tutor materials etc. However, there is still a strong focus on Celtic Folk Music.
Knaresborough School of Music offers tuition on a variety of instruments, with or without exams. Tuition includes tin whistle, saxophone, ukulele, piano/keyboard, guitar, clarinet, bodhran, harmonica and music theory.
Feel confident that your enthusiasm for learning music will be met with our passion for teaching it.
